Car Tyres

Choosing the right type

Tyres are traditionally made from woven steel wires that are then coated in rubber. It sounds quite simple doesn't it? Well, actually there can be up to 30 different components and substances that are used in the manufacture of tyres. The different compounds are added depending on the desired performance of the tyres.

Car tyres are a very important part of the vehicle as they are the only point of contact with the road surface, their condition can effect the way in which your vehicle handles. You must regularly check the condition of your car tyres, you could be endangering yourself and passengers if they are badly worn. This is due to worn tyres having reduced braking ability and steering control.

Tyres are all subject to an A-G grading called Tyre Labelling. Tyre labelling has been law since 2014 and aims to give the user a clear understanding how each type of tyre will perform. The classifications including in tyre labelling are fuel consumption, wet grip and noise classification. `A grade' tyres have the best wet grip, lowest fuel consumption and lowest noise rating, meaning that this is the highest rating available. The point of the initiative was to promote the highest quality, safest and most economical tyres with the lowest sound rating, to keep the roads and surrounding areas quieter.

When it comes to buying tyres, you tend to get what you pay for. This means that when you're looking for cheap tyres, you're getting a product that the manufacturer has made to a budget, rather than to fulfil a specification that includes safety and reliability. Premium tyres, such as Michelin are produced with extensive research, development and technological evaluation into their safety and performance, so it's little surprise that their price point reflects this.

There are 3 main types of tyres: summer tyres, winter tyres and all weather tyres. However there are other types of tyres and design as sub-sets of these. The most common type used in the UK is summer tyres as these suit the weather and driving conditions here relatively well all year round, by having a tread pattern that ensures they grip the road well, whilst remaining relatively rigid. All season tyres do exactly what you'd expect, they're designed to cope with all types of driving conditions, from hot sunny summer days through to cold wet and slippery days, however with this broad spectrum of performance, they're not as high performing during summer as summer tyres or during winter as winter tyres. Winter Tyres

These are specially designed and produced in a way that allows them to operate well in low temperatures. They usually have a more 'aggressive' tread pattern, to cope with driving through snow and ice. When it comes to the winter months, driving in general becomes much more dangerous and difficult. Roads can become slippery with rain, sleet, ice and snow so you want tyres that can cope with these changing conditions and offer you the grip and traction to be able to drive around safely and with confidence. Winter tyres typically use a tread rubber compound which has a high silica content. This allows them to remain flexible even when presented with low temperatures, meaning they can give enhanced breaking and traction even in icy conditions. It's important to note that during winter, it is recommended that you check whether your car insurance provider requires you to inform them when you fit winter tyres, as some stipulate this within their agreed terms. During winter, it's important to make sure that your tyres have a minimum of 2mm tread, although it is recommended that you have at least 3mm of tread if you're planning on doing any substantial amounts of driving during the cold weather.

Tyre Care

If you find that you go through more than the average amount of tyres then you may require wheel alignment or tracking. Check the condition, if they are wearing more on one side than the other or the wear seems uneven then this is a major sign of misaligned wheels.

No matter what type of tyres you have, it's important that you care for them and get them checked regularly.

• Check your tyre pressure every month - make sure it matched the manufacturers guidelines (See why here)
• Keep tyres balanced and wheels aligned - This won't only prolong the life of your tyres but save you money on petrol
• Never let your tyres get to the legal limit - Although "legal", 1.6mm across the middle 1/3 of the tyre is not the optimum amount of tread for safe driving.
• Check your tyres before any long journey - check for slow punctures, damage and tread levels to make sure your tyres are in good enough condition to get you to your destination.
